Making our way to the gate of the airport, I pulled the luggage along and loaded them on to a trolley. I began to make my way inside, briefly displaying the airline tickets to the security guard as Catherine brought along the kids, holding their hands. I felt the brief blast of air as I walked in, pushing the cart in front, making a squeaky noise as I looked for the luggage check in area. I told Catherine to bring the kids alongside to check in the luggage. We did this every time. There was little crowd at this time, so our turn came quick. I helped with loading the bags onto the weighing machine, while the lady behind the desk checked the number of tickets and handed us tags for our carrying luggage. She smiled her white perfect smile before wishing us a good flight. I returned the smile and Catherine thanked her before making way for the next family. I checked the ticket and holding Celina’s hand, we four walked towards the next stop.

Character Carousal

Walking on the shiny polished floor, we kept the trolley behind and held our hand luggage. We made our way to the security check, the last station I could go before having to say bye to the three of them. I handed the tickets over to Catherine, just outside the door leading to the security check. Looking over to Johnny and Celina, I realized that I had not told them about the fact that I would not be accompanying them to Florida. Looking into my wife’s eyes, she remembered the same and told me that they would be fine, with the soft warmth of her reassuring smile.

I sighed and bent down slightly, calling Johnny and Celina to come and stand with me as I had an important thing to say. “My sweethearts, listen to me. I won’t be coming to Florida with you and mommy.” Johnny cocked his head to the side in a questioning manner and Celina looked close to tears. I brought the two of them close to me in a hug, and explained further, “Daddy has to stay here for some office work. But I promise that daddy will come next time. Tears started flowing down Celina’s cheeks and she pushed me away while Johnny began to throw a tantrum. I held his shoulders and tried to calm him down, but nothing seemed to work. I stood up straight and tried to talk to Celina, but she just turned away from me.

Catherine touched my shoulder and I turned to see a disappointed look on her face. Her eyes scolded me; this isn’t how you handle it, they said. She went to them and squatted down and the two immediately hugged her. So it was like good cop, bad cop. They were mad at me, but Catherine whispered in their ears and they calmed down. They were still shooting me bad looks but they weren’t as upset anymore. I caught a few words. Catherine explain to Johnny that his daddy had to keep his stuffed toy dog, Joey, safe and that he would keep Celina’s bicycle safe from the robbers. By the end of the conversation, both were nearly back to their enthusiastic selves.

I leaned down to give both of them a hug and a kiss each on their foreheads. “Have fun at Disney World. Say hi to Tigger for me. And Celina say hi to Simba and give him your best roar”, I said, remembering their favorite Disney characters. Johnny began to bounce up and down in excitement true to Tigger and Celina hugged me tight saying she will miss me. I looked up and briefly kissed Catherine before they all went through the door to the security check in. I stood there, looking through the transparent wall as they finished the check in and I kept waving to them as they disappeared up the escalators.

I turned away with a sigh and began to walk out the airport. With each step, I thought of what I planned to do, now that I had the house to myself. Maybe I could have that relaxing week that I wanted, with not much to worry about except for that meeting. I thought of opening that meeting topic in my mind, but realized that it would be the wrong place to ponder about such grave topics. Plus it was exhausting and mind numbing, so I shrugged it off. I reached the parking lot and began towards where my car was parked. As I unlocked the car and sat inside, I understood what I could do. Picking up my cellphone, I scrolled down my phone book. My eyes searched for the word ‘Intern’ as I smiled at the clever cover up. I knew what I was going to do. I smirked and my heartbeat increased as I heard the phone ringing.

Taherah’s sweet voice greeted me and my heart skipped a beat as I remembered my time with her. “Hi Mitchell!”

“Hello Taherah. I’ve got a surprise for you”, I said in a smooth voice.

“Hmm”, she said with a slight quiver in her voice, which I found quite unusual. She cleared her throat for a moment and I frowned slightly, wondering if something was wrong. But then she continued, “Oh do you Mitchell?” Her voice smooth and sexy as ever, made me forget that there may have been something wrong. I grinned like a 5 year old with candy.

“Yes. Why don’t you come to receive it?” I said it in the most mischievous way with a playful smile playing on my lips.

“I see”, she said in response, playing along, “Your place or mine?”

“Mine.”

“Oh really? To what do I owe this honor?” She teased me, but there was a hidden hint of surprise in her voice. I explained to her how my family had gone to Florida or a vacation and that we would have the whole place to ourselves. I told her that I would come to pick her up in an hour and then put down the phone.

I looked out and sighed in anticipation. This would be the first time I would be bringing her to my home. Nervousness and excitement nibbled at my nerves, but I pushed away the nervousness with a goofy grin of excitement. This was going to be fun. With this thought, I turned on the car and backed out of the parking lot.
