Now that his mind was set on an idea, Richard felt himself more energized and more focussed. He always liked a life with directions (blame it on his profession!). He had now found a new direction and dimension. Though he had loved his days after the resignation: languishing all day, reading a book in a park, going to the club with his friends (though he had few as others hadn’t resigned yet!), he craved for doing something to bring back that sense of direction to his life. And the day he decided he wanted to start a car dealership business; he had felt the air clear up.

Now his next step was to know as much about the trade as possible. He had got up early following his age old routine and had eaten his breakfast by 8 in the morning. To make use of his time, he thought of doing some research on how to start a car dealership business. He took his laptop to his study, seated himself on the couch overlooking the window and started his search. He had been living in Singapore from quite some time so he had some idea about the preference of people when it came to cars. He just wanted to be sure, which company’s dealers would make it big in the years to come. He will have to go through the trends of the business in Singapore and also around Europe and American countries. He was going to put a huge amount of his savings in this business so he wanted to play safe. Every nitty gritty of the trade should be considered.

Character Carousal

He immersed himself into the research opening links after links and searching websites after websites. He was so engulfed in his work that he literally jerked at his cell phone’s ringtone. He cursed under his breath and grabbed the phone. His eyes immediately lit up when he saw the name flashing on the screen “Shraddha”. He felt guilty about the happiness he felt while looking at that name. He composed himself and picked the call.

“Hello… Am I talking to Richard Figg?” Shraddha’s sweet voice called from the other side. He had completely forgotten that he and Shraddha had exchanged numbers when they had accidentally met in the mall.

“Hey…. Hi Shraddha! Good Morning. Richard here!” He beamed.

“I hope I didn’t disturb you.” She said apprehension clear in her voice.

“Oh no… not at all. You are forgetting dear I am a retired man now. I can’t possibly be disturbed.” And he chuckled.

Shraddha’s voice relaxed on the other side. “Ha ha… yeah I had completely forgotten that. Richard Figg… the workaholic. I couldn’t quite place you as a retired man.”

“Well bad habits don’t die that fast you can say. It took me a long time to come out of that workaholic state.” He said easily. “But now I think I have been bitten again by the same bug”

Shraddha asked “You are talking about the car dealership business, right? Any developments so far?”

“Well not a concrete development! I have been searching and researching things to help me with the business thing.” He said. “Enough about me. Now tell me something about yourself. We couldn’t manage to meet in India after that accidental bump in and couldn’t catch up on things. You used to be such a chatter box. I am sure if we had met I would have had to sit through hours of your monologues.” He said lightly.

Shraddha laughed and said in a tone that had the quality of sadness in it. “Oh no… no… you wouldn’t have… times change… people change. I am not the same chatter box. and as far as the meeting is concerned. Let’s meet today evening.”

“What? Today evening? Still pulling my leg Shraddha? That was a good one I must say!” Nad he laughed out loud.

“I am asking you to meet today because I am in Singapore right now!” She said as matter of factly.

Richard sat upright “What? You are in Singapore?”

“Why are you so surprised? Did you forget that my brother lives in Singapore. I have come here to spend some days with his family. He has two of the prettiest little girls whom I adore. And they dote on Aarav…. my three year old. I have been here since last two days. Brother and sis-in-law are busy with their jobs. Kids are busy with each other so I thought of calling some ‘retired’ people.” She laughed in the end. Now she was pulling his leg.

“Wow…. that’s great! So we can finally meet and chat over a cup of coffee. If you ignore the last meeting in India a month ago, then we are probably meeting after nine years.” He said.

“Yes… nine long years!” Shraddha said a bit of the sadness creeping again in her voice. But then she brightened and asked where they should meet.

He replied: “Whichever place is comfortable for you. I shall reach there.”

“Okay, let’s meet at ‘Spice Junction’ on racecourse Road, Little India. I love the Keralite food they serve. You know the area….Right?” She asked.

“Of course I do. Who doesn’t know Little India in Singapore?” He joked.

“Okay so let’s meet at 7 then. I will bring along my son if you don’t mind. Want to make him taste the food. It is the first time he has come to Singapore.” She said

“Oh no… no.. why should I mind. I would love to meet him.” Said he.

“So….. done then! See you at 7.” Shraddha said sweetly. “Till then you retired people arrange your lunch and have some rest.”

“Ha ha… Will do! Bbye take care. See you at 7.” Richard chuckled and waited for Shraddha to disconnect the phone. He remembered how his mother used to say “Let the person who called you be the first to disconnect. These are manners Richie dear.” And he had stuck to that rule from that day.

He felt a spring in his step as he got up from the couch. He again felt guilty for it. “What’s wrong with you Richard?” he asked himself. But he dismissed the guilt the next second and started thinking about what he would wear today evening. “Thinking about dressing up? Something is absolutely wrong with you Richie baby.” He felt embarrassed and instead turned towards his kitchen to make a hot coffee for him.

“I am 45 years old and I am jumping like a teenager going on a date. Damn you Richie! She is a colleague meeting you after such a long time and that too with her son….. For God’s sake!” This hit the mark. Richard mellowed down and this calmed his nerves. He was indeed acting foolishly.

He concentrated on his coffee and started thinking about his business….. Cars. Who doesn’t love a cool stylish car? I am going to let people buy the car of their dreams and make them happy. He thought happily and started imagining the future. Before meeting Shraddha, he had lots of chores to do.
