Then there came a day when we were rehearsing for one of our upcoming plays on the stage. Dhaara was playing the part of a poor woman who works day and night to take care of her ailing mother. I was directing the play. It was a dress rehearsal. She was wearing a tattered saree with her hair tied in a messy bun… a few strands carelessly touching her cheeks…… and I could not take it any longer. She looked the epitome of beauty even in those tattered clothes and appearance of hers. I stood up from my chair went to the stage, took the microphone in my hand and said: If I promise to wash dishes for you, bring and cut vegetables for you, put cold presses on your forehead when you are ill and help in preparing meals with you… would you like to spend your life with me?’ The whole team burst into laughter but when they realised that I was serious, they all looked at Dhaara. Dhaara turned beet-root red and replied: ‘This may not be the most romantic marriage proposals I have heard but this indeed is the most caring one! And I like caring people. So it’s a Yes from me.’ The team started yelling and shrieking.”

Wow… as simple as that. So where did you marry her? Some swanky hotel to sweep her off her feet?” asked Turner trying to keep the environment light.

By this time Dhaara had wound up her kitchen chores. She smiled and seated herself besides Ashvin. The two girls flanked them making themselves comfortable on the handle of the cane sofa. It was Dhaara who answered: “He had already swept me off my feet. He didn’t need some swanky hotel or hi-fi wedding venue to do that!”

The elder girl Disha chimed in: “Mumma Papa’s wedding was one of a kind… really unique. You must have noticed…. when you came here…. there is an old age home on the way to Rangratna Theatre campus. Mumma Papa sought the permission from the old age home authorities, called a pandit there and married each other in the presence of some fifty elderly people plus my mom’s parents. And in the evening, all those elderly people dressed in the best of their clothes, had dinner with my parents and showered them with all the blessings in the world.……… Few of them came to my mother, kissed her forehead and told her with tears in their eyes…. they hadn’t felt such happiness in many years…. no one had visited them in years… forget inviting on a wedding.”

Turner felt his throat choke a little. And SR felt awkward….. some new feeling creeping into his heart. “So no drums and crackers…. and hoopla of a marriage continued Turner’s voice.

“Marriage is the day when you feel happy and that happiness can be brought about by different things. Our idea of happiness on our wedding day was giving those elderly people our time and sharing our big day with them. And it wasn’t a one off event. Me and Ashvin used to go and meet those people regularly… they were just like our family members… we had this thing planned from the day he had proposed to me…. and nothing changed post marriage… we celebrated our birthdays and our daughter’s birthdays with them every year. We continued to visit that old age home and still do.” said Dhaara with a gleam in her eyes.

“Fascinating!! Fascinating!” Turner managed to say only this. “And your journey to make Rangratna reach the hearts of people?”

What happens next? What do you think?
