Alex wanted time to think about how and why he would ever betray her. She wanted to not at all believe what was going on right in front of her. She wanted to just close her eyes and accept the inevitable. But Alex couldn’t. Because she was on a mission and it was her duty to see it through, with or without Aleverus. Her expression hardened and years of police training kicked into action.

Alex saw Aleverus’ finger tighten around the trigger and in the split second it would take for him to pull the trigger and for the bullet to cut straight at her, she ducked. Shocked, Aleverus didn’t move and in his moment of hesitation, Alex slammed the gun out of his hand. His eyes showed clear traces of disbelief and panic as he stumbled back, clutching his dislocated hand. In the moment that she bent over to pick up his gun, the two hooded figures ran away, but Aex kept her gun trained on Aleverus. He shook his head miserably as a single tear rolled down his cheek.

Alex had every intention of killing him, but every one of her muscles screamed otherwise and wouldn’t obey. Her brain commanded her to pull the trigger but her heart convinced it otherwise. She stared at him, anger ventilating out of every breath, but she didn’t pull the trigger. And in that moment, he turned and ran away, his eyes meeting hers for the last time.

She felt faint as her brain would not comprehend the recent events. Alex sank down to her knees and clutched her head, not loosening her grip on the gun. She kept her tears at bay as she realized the weight of the situation. Fumbling for her phone, she called up her superiors and explained the situation, mumbling and stumbling on words, barely forming a proper sentence in her grief. They reassured her that they were sending men to get her. And there, flooded with grief, pain and misery, she fell unconscious, succumbing to fate’s nasty tricks.
